How to enjoy free data usage daily


The Free Zone, offered on some Viasat Internet plans, is a period of time during which data usage is not metered or counted toward your monthly data allowance period. It’s a great time to download software updates, stream video, upload photos and other large files or do anything else you want to do online. The Free Zone hours are set to your local time zone and vary with each plan:

  • Classic: Late Night Free Zone (10, 15 or 25GB): Daily from 12 midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Evolution: Early Bird Free Zone: Daily from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Essential 10: Early Bird Free Zone: Daily from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Liberty 12/25/50: Early Bird Free Zone: Daily from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. 
  • Basic 25: Early Bird Free Zone: Daily from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Freedom: No Free Zone
  • Liberty: 10/18/30: No Free Zone
  • Unlimited Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum: No Free Zone

What is the Free Zone?

The Free Zone allows you to download and upload during the hours listed above without usage counting against your data allowance. This is for active Viasat Internet customers on Classic, Evolution, Essential or select Liberty and Basic plans only. 

What do I get with the Free Zone?

During the Free Zone, you receive 100% unmetered data usage, including both download sand uploads.

Does my modem reset for the Free Zone?

Yes, each day during the Free Zone time period, your modem automatically reboots to initiate the Free Zone, and usage during this time will not be counted. Then, at the end of the time period in your time zone, your modem again automatically reboots to deactivate the Free Zone, and your usage begins counting toward your data allowance again.

If I am restricted during my normal usage period, does my service remain restricted during the Free Zone?

No. During the Free Zone, your speeds are normal, no matter how much of your Data Allowance remains. If you are under Data Allowance Policy (DAP) enforcement (i.e. restricted), your modem reboots at the beginning of your Free Zone time period to remove enforcement and reboots again at the end of your time period to re-enable enforcement.

Will I see my Free Zone usage displayed on the Usage Meter?

No. During the Free Zone, your usage is not be counted in any way. During the hours of the Free Zone (per your plan and local time), you shouldn’t see any change in the usage meter.

I am a Recovery Act customer. Is the Free Zone available to me?

Yes, the Late Night Free Zone is available to all Classic Viasat customers, including those on our Recovery Act plans. (The Evolution and Essential plans were not offered under the Recovery Act.)

What if I still need more data outside of the Free Zone?

If you need additional data allowance outside of the Free Zone, you can Buy More, or upgrade your monthly plan. 

If I purchased Buy More, how is that used during the Free Zone?

Your unused Buy More data is not used during the Free Zone, only during the times outside your Free Zone time period.

I need help scheduling downloads during the Free Zone. Where can I go for assistance?

Viasat does not recommend one particular download manager, since there are multiple Operating Systems. Instead, we ask that you go directly to sites that support your operating system.
